About the Embassy

The Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Havana was established in September, 2016. The establishment of the Mission was inspired by the historical relations between Kenya and the Republic of Cuba. It is worth noting that Cuba was the first Caribbean country to establish a diplomatic mission in Kenya. The location of the Mission in the Caribbean was also informed by the critical role that the Republic of Cuba plays in the multilateral and global arena thus making Havana a hub for diplomatic engagement. In addition, the central location of Havana in the Caribbean makes it a convenient launch pad for engagements with other countries in the region.

At its inception, the Mission was accredited to the Republic of Cuba, Barbados, Dominican Republic, Guyana, Jamaica and the Caribbean Community. In 2021, the jurisdiction of the Mission was expanded to include more Caribbean and Latin American countries namely Bahamas, Barbados, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Panama, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela. The expanded mandate was informed by the increased potential for the realisation of economic, social and political benefits for Kenya through bilateral relations with these countries and the leadership role Kenya has been playing in Africa-Caribbean relations.

The Embassy of Kenya in Havana is a unique Mission compared to other Kenyan Missions abroad. The Embassy is the first diplomatic mission of Kenya in the Caribbean. It covers the largest number of countries spread over three diverse regions namely the Caribbean, South America and Central America. In addition, the geography and location of the countries of coverage, majority being island states and with three different official languages, compounds the special circumstances in which the Embassy operates. The location of the Mission in the Caribbean, which is majorly populated by afro-descendants whom the African Union has identified as the sixth region of Africa, adds to the critical role that it is expected to play in promoting Kenya’s leadership in the cooperation between Africa and its diaspora.
